20th May 2008 -High Power DC Test System for the development of large hybrid vehicles

Alternative drive train systems are increasingly important not only for automobiles. More and more hybrid and electric drives are being developed for large vehicles such as buses, trucks and locomotives. For testing of these vehicles during development, such as simulation of the on-board supply system, DC Sources providing extremely high power are required.
The US-based manufacturer AeroVironement specializes in these applications and offers with the model AV-900 a testing solution covering the specific requirements of large vehicles. The model AV-900 delivers up to 250 kW in a voltage range from 8 to 900 VDC, as required for testing of electric and hybrid drives and corresponding components including inverters, batteries and fuel cells. Unlike standard DC Power Sources the systems offered by AeroVironment have two independent output channels and can be used both as source and as load. They are able to load back the absorbed energy to the mains with high efficiency. This makes external loads dispensable. The electric energy that would otherwise be lost can be stored back.
This bi-directional load capability is a crucial factor for the described test applications, because they work with unusually high power. The test system can be controlled by a computer and includes specific algorithms that enable various tests such as fast charging of batteries or battery simulation. All systems from AeroVironment can be delivered with a CAN-Interface upon customer’s request.
